* Students are given an expository prompt to brainstorm.
* They start making an outline of their ideas.

WEDNESDAY, November 16

* A mini-lesson is given about writing the controlling idea.
* Students will also write their first body paragraph.

TUESDAY, November 8
* Great Lives, Great Deeds: Friendships of Abraham Lincoln
* Show the students again the structure of the expository essay and the strategies that accompany those:introduction-the attention grabbers; body-reason, explanation, example, link (REEL); conclusion-insight,rephrase,summary,advice (IRSA), concrete, abstract (CA)
* Show the strategies at work in a model essay.
* Show more examples of accomplished essays from scoring guide and point out how the authors successfully used the strategies.

WEDNESDAY, November 9
* Great Lives, Great Deeds on Lincoln
* Continue the expository essay modeling
   * Students now brainstorm a prompt.
   * A mini-lesson on magnifying: picking one topic
   
     THURSDAY, November 10
    * Great Lives, Great Deeds on Lincoln
    * Students outline the brainstormed ideas.
    * A mini-lesson on telescoping: staying on topic
