Pennies

In a time of
credit cards, e-bucks, checks, and coupons,
we need the copper colored cent like we need memories
to keep us balanced
and remind of where we came from and
 who we are,
Pennies to pick up –
honest side up –
to remind us of the good that’s in the world.
Pennies to jingle in our
pockets after buying fireworks,
and to spend Thursdays wrapping in paper rolls
while Dad talks about his school years.
For filling that first
ceramic bank and collecting
over weeks to buy gum from the corner store
next to the grandparents’ house.
We need them to teach the cousins
how to count and to be the stencil head
of all the stick drawings.
We need pennies like we need pictures.
Something to hold on to
while we go back.
Something to never forget
and a reason to never want to.
